Types of Pregnancy Tests

If you are looking for the best pregnancy tests on the market today, it is important that you do your research first. Since there are several pregnancy tests on the market, you can choose which one will be the most accurate.

Given that the information these tests reveal can set off a chain reaction, good and bad, everyone woman would like to know the complete truth about their specific situation as quickly as possible. With that being said, here are some of the top or most common types of pregnancy tests and a brief description of each.

Home Pregnancy Tests

Because technology has changed so dramatically over the years, people are always looking for swift answers to any question that is posed to them. So, one of the quickest ways to find out if you are pregnant, is by buying a home pregnancy test.

A home pregnancy test (HPT) is normally recommended for a variety of reasons. One of the most notable is when you discover or recognize that you have missed you period and are concerned. Also, for those who are currently sexually active, this can be a sign that they may be expecting.

Fortunately, there are HPTs that can be used to confirm pregnancy or not. For any woman who is interested in knowing these results right away, some home tests can produce accurate results as early as the first day that they missed their period.

It is also important to note that there are also tests available today that can reflect these results much earlier, based on how sensitive these tests have been designed. However, as mentioned in our previous post on the accuracy of home pregnancy tests, after testing negative before a missed period, a repeat test should be performed on the day or a few days after the missed period to avoid a false negative.

Clinical Pregnancy Tests

In addition to HPTs, women have access to pregnancy tests that are performed inside a doctor’s office. In some circles, these tests are usually referred to as clinical pregnancy tests.

Even though the physician is the one who performs or orders this test, they are not always considered more accurate than home pregnancy tests. However, one of the best advantages of having a clinical pregnancy test performed in a doctor’s office is the elimination of errors in the results reported.

Also, the cost of these tests can be considerably higher based on the insurance plan that you have access to. Even though these tests can vary in type, the results from a clinical test are normally available within a week.

Blood Tests

Another common pregnancy test is the blood test. In the lab, the primary objective is to detect human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in the blood to determine whether the woman is pregnant.

Currently, there are at least 2 types of blood tests that can be performed, one of which is called a qualitative hCG blood test, while the latter is known as quantitative hCG blood test. Each is used in different ways to determine if the patient is pregnant. The qualitative hCG blood test is used to determine if any hCG is being produced in the woman’s body. With this test, the result is either yes or no.

Similar to the qualitative blood test, the quantitative test is designed to measure the amount of hCG in the blood. The level or the amount of hCG in the blood determines whether the person is pregnant and how far along they are in their pregnancy. In some cases, the physician may order additional tests like an ultrasound to further verify and confirm the date in which the baby will be due.

Things to Consider Before Buying a Pregnancy Test

Buying the right kind of pregnancy test can be a very challenging experience. Because of all of the different types and versions on the market, choosing the best and most effective one can be difficult, especially if you do not know what to look for. Fortunately, there is a lot of great information online that identifies the different types and explains the variances in each. With that being said, here are several things that can be considered before the final decision has been made.

Choose a Test Based on Your Personal Circumstances

Each individual’s situation is different since the number of days until the person’s next period is factored into determining the best type for that specific circumstance. Because some tests make different claims in detecting when a woman pregnant, the type can make a significant different as well.

In some cases, you may have a false negative result if the test is used before your expected period date.

On the other hand, many of these tests are considered to be at least 99% accurate when they are taken within the appropriate amount of time that is stated in the manufacturer’s instructions.

Look for Both Digital and Traditional Testing Options

Digital and traditional pregnancy tests are used for different reasons, so it is essential that you are familiar with both. The results of digital tests are very simple to read so there are no unknown mistakes that come from the results

In fact, when used, similar to the clinical tests performed by a physician, the results are produced by the level of hCG in the woman’s body since it reaches its maximum levels within the first 7 to 12 weeks of pregnancy. No mistakes or guessing is required because the results state clearly, pregnant or not pregnant.

Like traditional testing that requires the prospective mother to interpret the results from a single line sign (|) or a double line sign (||), a double line sign is interpreted as ‘pregnant’ and the single line sign is interpreted as ‘not pregnant’.

Regular Versus Digital Pregnancy Tests

As previously stated, there are some differences between regular pregnancy testing and digital testing. Even though the digital test is much easier to read and is self-explanatory, there are still some unique benefits that each offer.

Here are some of the benefits of the digital test and its drawbacks.

  • Easier to read (self-explanatory)—no guessing or interpreting involved
  • Digital testing is not able to detect the results as early as the traditional pregnancy testing so you will need to wait to confirm your results
  • Digital testing is more likely to be less sensitive so it will only detect hCG levels at higher amounts to provide an accurate testing

With this in mind, if you are expecting to see accurate results as early as possible, the traditional home pregnancy tests are highly recommended over the digital method.

Brand Name Versus Generic Pregnancy Tests

Brand names or their counterparts are all over the market today. In fact, there seems to be a generic brand for virtually everything that is offered. The same is true for home pregnancy tests since there are clearly some brand names that everyone knows, thanks to marketing, and others that may not be recognizable to the consumer.

Whatever the case, it is important to note that the brand and the cost can make a significant difference in the results obtained. If you are looking for the best pregnancy test to get accurate results, one rule of thumb is to consider both economics and the timing. Here are a few tips to go by when making the purchase.

  • Compare sensitivity levels in the tests. Typically, the sensitivity levels (hCG amounts) are much higher in the costlier tests or the brand-name test
  • Wait at least 1 day past your expected period date before using the test
  • FDA-approved tests fall within the high 90 percent accuracy range

Six Best Pregnancy Test Reviews

When it comes to choosing the right pregnancy test, it can sometimes be confusing. This is largely because there are so many options available that women might not really know where to turn when it comes to choosing the best one for their needs.

In this review, we considered the pregnancy detection rate and ease of use to select the best pregnancy tests and hope that this will help you better understand what test might be the right one for you.

When you purchase this test, you are actually getting three tests in the box. This is beneficial because there will be times when you will need to have an extra test on hand and it is always a good idea to take at least two tests in order to make sure they both say the same thing. However, there is much more to this particular product than meets the eye. In fact, it is the only test of its kind.

It actually counts down the time that you have to wait in order to see results, letting you know that it is working, but more importantly, letting you know exactly where you stand when it comes to getting your results. It also has an accuracy rate of more than 99 percent, something that is exceptionally important to any woman.

This test is designed a little bit differently than many of the other tests that are currently available. First and foremost, you can take the test the same day that you should get your period. This means that you don’t have to wait for a very long time to find out what is really going on. It is also specially designed to reduce mess, thereby reducing erroneous results.

How to Use the Clearblue Digital with Smart Countdown

Overall, this is a solid test that is well designed with the user in mind. This makes it a good choice for anyone who hasn’t used a pregnancy test before, as well as for those who haven’t had favorable experiences with other types of tests in the past.

When a woman suspects that she might be pregnant, she needs to know as quickly as possible whether or not that is the case. Most women decide to take a pregnancy test at home, largely because that is the most convenient way to take the initial test. This is especially true for any woman who has a busy lifestyle and who doesn’t always have time to make an appointment with the doctor just for an initial pregnancy test. In this Clearblue Plus Pregnancy Test review, you can come to better understand how the test works and why so many women use it.

As is the case with most pregnancy tests from this company, three separate tests are included. Two of them are standard tests and one is a digital version. The main thing to remember about this particular product is that it is a simple item that is easy to use. It is also easy to read the results with a high level of accuracy. However, it is important to remember that you need to read those results as quickly as possible, as leaving the test sitting out will cause it to become unreadable. Typically, you have approximately 10 minutes after the test is used to read accurate results.

How to Use the Clearblue Plus Pregnancy Test

The good thing about this test is that it is backed by Clearblue’s high level of accuracy. Like most of the company’s tests, you can count on an accuracy rate that is over 99 percent as long as you take the test at the appropriate time and read it immediately when the results are available. Typically, you can take the test the first day that you miss your period.

If you really want accurate results and you need them quickly, this is a test that you can count on. The fact that multiple tests are included in the box only serves to increase the level of accuracy that you can experience with this product. Therefore, it is a good option for most women to use.

If you think you might be pregnant, your first thought probably revolves around getting a pregnancy test that you can take at home. However, you might want to consider test strips such as the ClinicalGuard HCG Pregnancy Test Strips. Some women far prefer using the strips to a standard pregnancy test, so if you are one of these individuals, this could be the right product for you. If you haven’t tried these strips in the past, you might find that you like them better than the standard tests that most women purchase over the counter.

The most important thing to know about these test strips is that they are easy to use. It only takes a small amount of urine in order to get a reading, so you can do so quickly. They are also easy to read, as a negative reading will be indicated by a single band on the strip while a positive reading will be indicated by the presence of several bands that are distinct in nature. This reduces the chances that you might read the test wrong or that it might be ambiguous, forcing you to take another test just so you can know one way or the other.

Another advantage of this particular product is that 25 strips are included in the box. This gives you the chance to take multiple tests as often as you feel the need as opposed to having to go out and purchase additional pregnancy tests. Furthermore, each strip is individually wrapped and sealed in order to protect the integrity of the test and ensure that the strips remain sterile.

Overall, this is a good option for practically any woman who suspects that she might be pregnant. Because of the overall accuracy of the strips and the fact that they are easy to use, many people routinely rely on them.

If you are considering taking a home pregnancy test, there is a better than average chance that you are looking for the most cost-effective method that you can find without compromising accuracy. Therefore, the Easy@Home 25 Pregnancy (HCG) Urine Test Strips might be the right product for you.

The box comes with 25 test strips and each is individually sealed. This gives you the maximum level of flexibility when it comes to testing for pregnancy, as you can test as many times as you would like and even keep additional tests on hand for future use. The only thing you need to make sure of is that you don’t allow the test strips to sit for too long, so be sure to check the expiration date listed on the box.

Like most test strips, these tests are designed to be placed in urine. Your best course of action is to use a cup and then dip the strips into that cup for just a few seconds. Upon removing the strip from the cup, you can expect results in three to five minutes. These tests produce clear results, so there is no ambiguity as to whether or not the test is positive or negative.

Typically, you can expect to get accurate results one day before you should have your cycle. Of course, it is always recommended that you follow up the initial test with at least one more additional test a few days later in order to ensure accuracy. With that being said, you can test as many times as you feel the need to do so, especially with 25 test strips in the box.

Overall, this is a good test with a high level of accuracy, and it doesn’t take a long time to complete the test itself. Therefore, it is a solid option for any woman who is considering purchasing a home pregnancy test.

If you are looking for a home pregnancy test that is easy to use and equally as easy to read, you might choose to go with the First Response Early Result Pregnancy Test. This particular product actually has a lot of good things going for it, which is why it is considered by many to be the most popular home pregnancy test available.

As the name implies, this test is designed to give you early results. In fact, it can be used in as few as six days before you expect to get your next period. The good thing to know is that the test offers a relatively high degree of accuracy, even this early on. If you are taking the test the first day that you would normally expect to get your period, that accuracy level increases to better than 99 percent. Three tests are included in the box, so you can take one test almost a week early, then retake the test when you would normally expect to get your cycle.

The thing that really sets this test apart, aside from the fact that it can be used six days before you expect to get your period, is that it is ergonomically designed. This means that it is much easier for you to use without making a mess, and it is also easier to read. Two bars means you are pregnant while one means the test was negative. Furthermore, you can get your results in as few as three minutes so you won’t have to wait for what feels like an eternity to know if you are pregnant.

As previously mentioned, this test is different from a lot of the other products that are available on the market. If you want something that you can use several days earlier than most products, and you want it to be easy to use and read, this is a good product that can fit your needs. In other words, if you just can’t stand the suspense any longer, this test might be able to put your mind at ease earlier than just about any other pregnancy test that is currently on the market.

Some women simply do not prefer the standard pregnancy tests that are readily available on most supermarket shelves. If this describes your feelings, you might choose the Wondfo Pregnancy Test Strips.

These strips are a little bit different than a standard pregnancy test because they are designed to be dipped in urine. While some women do choose to use them in the same way that they would any other pregnancy test, they actually work best when you place your urine in a cup and then dip the strips into it, as this provides better accuracy and less mess. The strips are extremely easy to use and the results are also equally easy to decipher once you have completed the test, with results coming in just five minutes.

The box comes with 25 strips so retesting is not a problem. Typically, most women can expect the most accurate answers the first day that they would normally have their period, although some women have reported that they can take the test as many as five days before that time with accurate results. The most important thing to remember is that the test strips are designed to read hormone levels, so retesting is important, as hormone levels will vary from one woman to the next.

The good news is that with 25 strips available per box, you have the opportunity to retest as often as you feel necessary so you have the ability to enjoy a high level of confidence that you are getting accurate results. If you have tried other pregnancy tests in the past and you either got false readings or simply didn’t care about the way the tests worked, this might be a good option for you to try.

Conclusion

When you are looking for a pregnancy test to determine whether you are pregnant, you may discover very quickly that there are quite a few versions on the market today. Because of the critical nature of the information that you obtain, it is essential that the test you purchase is accurate. Therefore, you should consider several factors in advance. Some of the most important involve knowing how all pregnancy tests work (home test, clinical test, and blood test) and how timing factors into deciding which test is the most accurate and reliable for your specific circumstances. This can help you in making the best-informed decision possible.

Wow I did not have any idea on how many options we have for a pregnancy test I am really impressed. But in my opinion I think I couldn’t use the one for days before, I guess I would be afraid that if is negative but my period is not coming when I think it will I will ran to the pharmacy to do another test and that’s mean paying more at the end.

I agree with you, Darmendra. False negatives can happen and it is worth waiting until the day of a missed period to perform the test.

Hi..
you seemed to have researched the topic thoroughly to dig out so much helpful information. But as i was reading the web page top to bottom i started to feel like i am being bombarded with information; i think a general user who wants to be sure about her pregnancy is already in pretty confused state; the page will be really helpful if the user gets to a solution soon. You yourself can suggest some products or some method.
It will help the user decide early about which product to choose and then go buy it.
That is my point of view.
